Engineering the capability

A strong FDE portfolio shows how a problem became an operable solution. Include discovery evidence, alternatives considered, implementation boundaries, evaluation results, rollout decisions, and handoff. A polished chatbot alone does not demonstrate customer-facing engineering judgment.

Use a simulated engagement when real customer work is unavailable and label it clearly. Preserve the difference between assumed value, measured prototype behavior, and real operational results. Repositories should use synthetic data and contain enough setup information for another engineer to reproduce the main path.

Prepare to explain decisions under changing constraints. What if the customer cannot send data to your chosen service? What if the identity system changes? What if a pilot improves accuracy but increases handling time? Good answers connect evidence, tradeoffs, and a concrete next experiment rather than naming more tools.

Worked case

An interviewer asks why you used an agent. Show the fixed-workflow baseline, cases where adaptive retrieval helped, and the added latency. If the gain was small, explaining why you removed the agent demonstrates stronger judgment than defending unnecessary complexity.

Put it into practice

Continue with the next lab: defend a customer-delivery case study. Build the artifact, record the failure cases, and explain the tradeoff before moving on.
