Publishing to Google Play Store

article30 minMedium

Publishing to Google Play makes your app available to users. The process includes account setup, app listing, policy declarations, testing tracks, and production rollout.

Create A Play Console Account

Use Google Play Console to create a developer account. Fill in required identity and payment details. Keep the account secure with two-factor authentication.

Prepare The App Bundle

Google Play prefers Android App Bundles.

./gradlew bundleRelease

The output is usually an .aab file under the app module's build folder.

Store Listing

Your store listing should clearly explain what the app does.

Prepare:

  • app name
  • short description
  • full description
  • screenshots
  • feature graphic if required
  • app icon
  • category
  • contact email
  • privacy policy URL if needed

Do not overpromise. Store copy should match the actual app.

Policy And Data Safety

Google Play asks about data collection, permissions, ads, target audience, and app access. Answer accurately.

If your app collects personal data, explain why and link a privacy policy.

Testing Tracks

Use internal testing before production. Upload the app, add testers, and share the opt-in link.

Testing tracks help you catch:

  • install issues
  • login problems
  • crashes on real devices
  • missing assets
  • policy warnings

Production Rollout

When ready, promote the release to production. Start with a staged rollout if the app has meaningful risk. Monitor crashes, reviews, and vitals after launch.

Practice

For a sample app, prepare a mock Play Store listing: title, description, screenshots checklist, permissions explanation, and release notes.

Summary

Publishing is both technical and operational. Build an app bundle, prepare a truthful listing, complete policy forms, test internally, and monitor the release after it goes live.
